While on a hike, Sam lets a pine bough snap back into his father's face, and his father is temporarily blinded. Thomas captures the mood of a child on the cusp of adolescence. That a twelve-year-old is able to overcome a seven-foot cougar with a hatchet may strain readers' credulity, but it fits the narrative trope well.

While she and her grandmother (Bon) visit friends on a farm, Ellen fights her habit of snooping through other people's things. Long on description and short on context, the book doesn't distinguish between snooping and natural childhood curiosity until close to the end of the story, an ambiguity which might confuse some readers. Bon's constant shaming seems out of proportion to Ellen's actions. Expressive drawings extend the text.

Elizabeth I, the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, comes alive in this vital and intelligent biography. Throughout, Thomas has a good story to tell--one full of intrigue, passion, and larger-than-life characters--and her documentation backs it up. This handsome book, filled with black-and-white photographs, contains a stunning eight-page color insert of the queen's life in portraits. Bib., ind.
